What we promise, and what we print when we can’t.

A summariser can restate an opinion. It cannot restate a measurement nobody took, or vouch for a sample nobody bought. These rules cover the part of the work that does not survive being paraphrased — and on this desk an absence is printed rather than omitted.

SAMPLE PROVENANCE

Every story states how the hardware was obtained: bought at retail, lent and returned, lent and kept, or figures supplied by the vendor. With dates.

A blank field renders in red as “Not stated”. It is a visible gap, not a silent one.

MEASUREMENTS RESOLVE

Aggregate claims must resolve to individual logged lines — metric, value, method. “We tested 47 of them” is publishable only when 47 rows exist.

The method column names the instrument and the condition, so the number can be argued with.

DISCLOSURE IN THE OPEN

Commercial relationships print on the story itself, in the same block as the provenance, at the same size as everything else.

Nothing labelled commercial is withheld from crawlers while unlabelled commercial content is served through. Labels point the same way for readers and for machines.

VERSION STAMPS

Each post records the standards version it was filed under. When the protocol changes, older posts keep their original stamp instead of silently inheriting the new one.

Republishing a story does not reset its date.
